A Celebration of Life for Alfred Edwards, III, will be held Tuesday, June 2, 2026, 10:00 AM at Franklin Avenue Baptist Church, 8282 I-10 Service Rd, New Orleans, LA 70126. Senior Pastor Fred Luter, Jr., Officiant, Pastor Johnell Thomas, Presiding.
The family will visit with guest on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, 9:00 AM-10:00 AM at Franklin Avenue Baptist Church.
Mr. Edwards will be interred on Monday, June 8, 2026, Southeast Louisiana Veterans Cemetery in Slidell, LA.
Alfred Theodore Edwards, III, affectionately known as “Pops” was summoned from service to eternal rest on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, at the age of 78.
Born on December 26, 1947, in New Orleans, LA. Alfred was the beloved son of the late Alfred T. Edwards, Jr. and the late Ora Gettridge Edwards.
He was a graduate of George Washington Carver High School. Following graduation, he dedicated his life to service by enlisting in the United States Air Force in April of 1966, deepening his commitment to family, community, and country.
Upon returning from servicing his country, Alfred enrolled in Xavier University at New Orleans, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Early Childhood Education, and a Master’s degree in Higher Education. He later furthered working towards his doctorate, receiving thirty-plus hours.
A man with a strong work ethic, he served the New Orleans Public School System for over 30 years.
His dedication, wisdom, and service were far more than teaching lessons from a book, he inspired dreams, built confidence, shaped futures, and leaves footprints on the hearts of countless students. His patience, encouragement, and commitment have made a lasting impact that will continue for generations to come.
Alfred is survived by his loving, dedicated, devoted wife, Carmel Balthazar Edwards; children, David (Lynthea) Edwards, Julius (Amanda) Brown, Everette (Dana) Edwards, Iman Edwards, Junonna T. Alexis, Denna A. Trufant, Kimberlyn T. (James) Gibson, Moneak Trufant, Edwin (Rosana) Trufant, Jr., and Tyric Trufant; sisters, Cheryl Sterling, and Marilyn Edwards; brothers, Anthony (Pamela) Edwards, Daniel (Darlene) Edwards; sisters-in-law, Ingrid Edwards, Xavier Barrier, and Evangelia Lombard; aunts, Beverly Johnson, and Paulette McKinney; uncle, Carl McKinney; 26 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren, all of whom were his pride & joy; host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and lifelong friends who will deeply miss his presence.
He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Una Mae Edwards Adams, Karen Edwards, and Wanda Edwards; sons, Daron Edwards, and Jamau Edwards; daughter-in-law, Chanda Edwards.
He leaves behind a legacy rooted in devotion to family, education, and a commitment to serving the community. His memory will live on in the hearts of his family, and classmates of George Washington Carver High School, and the Alums of Xavier University at New Orleans, especially Dem Vets, his Xavier University Alumni Veteran classmates.
