"Faith is not what God CAN do; it is what God WILL do."-Unknown
Carlton Huey Martin, known to his family and close friends as "Gramps" or "Uncle Peanut," peacefully transitioned in the comfort of his home on Saturday, May 29, 2021 while under the watchful care of his loved ones. Carlton's life and legacy speaks for itself and can be witnessed in the many lives he has touched over the years. An adored blessing to everyone he met, it is safe to say he was a distinguished gentleman of godly character and a man of great faith.
Born on June 12, 1934, to Rebecca Martin, he is said to have been created to explore the world. He first began work in Allain fields then moved to Houston, TX, which became his second home, before being drafted into the United States Army where he received certifications and distinguished honors in his field of work.
Carlton was a lifelong and dedicated believer and student of Jesus Christ and would discuss the "mysteries of God" with anyone who was interested or willing to listen. Although he has been known to say his life was perfect and free from error, within his humility, he often described himself to his children and grandchildren, not as righteous or perfect by any measure, but upstanding in his journey to the creator's grace. This is what made him exceptional. He possessed the understanding that even though we are not perfected beings in human form, God makes no mistakes in how he chooses to use and develop us.
Carlton was an entrepreneur for over 40 years, beginning several businesses including: A&M Trucking, Space Age Systems, and BBQ & More. A skilled truck driver and owner-operator for many years, Carlton was contracted by many companies, including: Western Line, Fogleman, Estillette Pepper Company and Landstar Ligon, which permitted him to experience 48 of 50 states throughout his career, earning him the radio call handle "The Golden Eagle". Carlton inspired and mentored many black men in the community to also become skilled truckers, owner-operators and to build companies of their own at a time when this was nearly impossible for minorities to do. He retired at least 5 times, a true testament to how passionate he was about his work, but eventually rounded out his driving career in 2014 with Cajun Chef.
Carlton is preceded in death by the love of his life, Barbara Green Martin, his wife of 58 years, his mother, Rebecca Martin, daughters, Merewyn Charles and Sesalye Martin, sons, Lyndon and Jeffrey Martin Sr. as well as siblings Nolan Martin (Bernice), Nelson Martin (Ruth), Charles H. Johnson Sr., sister, Ollie Mae Johnson, niece Koren Jack and nephew, Rory Martin.
He leaves to cherish his memory, one sister, Australia Alexander; two daughters, Ianthia "Inky" Joseph (Keith) and Erica Martin; two bonus sons, Henry E. Tibbs (Bonnie) and Willie D. Lewis (Allison); eight grandchildren, Kaitlyn Marks, Raylon Joseph (Terry Hardy Jr.), Adrian Joseph, Marcus Joseph (Shakendra), Jeffrey Martin Jr. (Delilah), Kyle Martin (Monae), Taylor Martin, and Devante' Joseph; four great-grandchildren, Alivia Joseph, Zaccai Starks, and Jaelin and Ethan Martin; daughter-in-law, Carla Martin; aunt, Dr. Elizabeth Ann Martin.
Final arrangements have been entrusted by MK Dixon Funeral Home, 337-940-9253, 211 Main Street, Baldwin, LA 70514.
