On Thursday December 28, 2023, Devon James Charles, transitioned to his heavenly home at 6:27 a.m. At the young age of 30, Devon's last days were spent in the Intensive Care Unit at Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center in Lafayette, La.
Devon was born on December 17, 1993, in New Iberia, La to Denise Charles and the late Robert Raymond. He was a faithful member of Macedonia Baptist Church under the direction of Rev. Ulysses Mitchell, Jr. Devon was educated through the St. Mary Parish School system, which led him to successfully obtain his High School Diploma from West St. Mary High in 2012. Due to Devon being diagnosed with a brain tumor at the age of 15, short-term memory loss hindered him from gaining employment with any organization full-time. But that did not stop him from doing work, Devon would undoubtably lend a helping hand to anyone who needed it. If you knew Devon, you knew he liked to talk (a lot) and listen to music; and to many he was known as the "candy man", he liked handing out candy at church every Sunday. He was the ultimate people's person. Devon enjoyed hanging out with his buddies and most of all taking vacations, his favorite were cruises.
He leaves to cherish his precious memories: his loving mother, Denise Charles (Gary) of Carencro, La; Two sisters, Brandie Charles of Broussard, La and Mimi Raymond of Jeanerette, La; One brother, Eric Raymond of Baton Rouge, La; Four aunts, Deborah Alexander of Houston, Tx., Darlene Charles of Four Corners, LA; one uncle, Bernard Charles, Sr. of Four Corners, La.. One Grandmother Martha Charles of Four Corners, La. Three Godmothers, Carolyn Francis, Darlene Charles, and JoAnn Hamilton. Three Godfathers, Tryone "Ben" Johnson, King Charles, Sr., and Hillard "Friday" Matthews. His favorite nieces, Chamyra Charles, Sojlander Howard, and Diamond Bennett. His favorite nephew Asher McDaniel. His best friends Trey Jordan and Oscar "Big O" Steward III. Two men that he admired and enjoyed spending time with: Mr. Eric Metz and Richard "Slick Rick" Grant; and lastly his brother from another mother, Mckinley Jackson. He also leaves a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends that shared a special bond.
He was preceded in death by his father Robert Raymond. His great-uncles, Percy Charles, Sr., Lawrence Charles, Sr., Roy Charles, Sr., and Edward Charles, Jr. His great-aunts Delores Coleman and Doris Spencer. And his Great-great grandma Loretta Charles and Great-grandpa Edward Charles, Sr.
