Eugene "Doc" Pickett Nelson was born on December 15, 1944, to the late Mr. John Mark Nelson and Mrs. Lillian "Tinkey" Pickett Nelson in Charenton, Louisiana. In this community, he attended Mary Hines Elementary School and grew up in a nurturing environment of family and childhood friends.  As a result, he was a happy person since his childhood.

Eugene attended Saint John Baptist Church with his family, where he was baptized by Reverend William Castle at an early age.  He attended several churches during his lifetime when he lived in different locations. Most recently, he attended Mount Olive Baptist Church #2 in New Iberia, Louisiana.

As a young man, Eugene was a migrant worker in two states, Florida and New York. Later, he was employed locally by Cajun Installation in Lafayette, Louisiana.

During his marriage to Eleanor Mae Jones of New Iberia, Louisiana, they became the Godparents to Michael Jason Nelson of Austin, Texas.

Eugene lived his life to the fullest. He was an avid jokester who enjoyed cooking, dancing, and patronizing Cypress Bayou Casino. Although he did not drive, he always had transportation to where he needed to go.

Many people will remember Eugene as "Mr. GQ" because he regularly dressed up in suits with matching coat pocket handkerchiefs, hats, and shoes.  To complete his stylish look, he wore a pair of sunglasses.

Death is but a dream, and Eugene now dreams with his parents; six sisters: Lena Nelson Pierre, Rose Nelson Jones, Clara Nelson Walker, Ruth Nelson Lewis, Emma Dell Fontenot Pierre, and Laura Nelson Williams; and four brothers: Nolan Nelson, Joseph Nelson, Andrew Nelson, and Berlin Nelson.

Remaining to cherish his memory are his brother, Elridge (Dr. Wanda) Nelson of Austin, Texas; special friend, Prathea Walker of Houston, Texas; sister-in-law, Paulette Ramsey Nelson of Dallas, Texas; sister-in-law, Leatha Joseph Nelson of Dallas, Texas; and a multitude of nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
