Hammon Polk was the son of the late Mary Green and Hammon Polk, Sr. He was born on February 16, 1932 in Loreauville, LA and was a lifelong resident of New Iberia, LA. Hammon was one of seven children born to this union.
Hammon was a lifetime, dedicated member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church #1, also known as "The Polk Church" where, when he was physically able to do so, served for years as a member of Mt. Zion's Usher Board.
On February 2, 1952 Hammon was united in marriage to the beautiful Loretta Charles. To this union six children were born. He was a devoted husband, grandfather, brother, uncle, nephew, and cousin who always put the best interest of his family first.
Hammon was hard-working, dependable, of high character, amiable, caring, and loving. He had a wonderful sense of humor and always wore a contagious and engaging smile everywhere he went. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing, reading books/magazines/newspapers, etc., watching sports, taking annual bus trips to a variety of popular US attractions with the Manhattans Social and Civic Club and most importantly going on outings with his family. "Mr. Polk", as everyone affectionately and respectfully called him, never met a stranger and was always willing to help others in need. He has been an excellent example of strength, unconditional love, and loyalty – an endearing legacy to his family.
Hammon was employed by Mixon Lbr. Co. /West End Rentals and worked in the construction/building industry for 50 years until his retirement at the age of 79.
