James “Cop” Duchan

A Celebration of Life for James "Cop" Nelson Duchan, will be held Saturday, February 1, 2025, at 1:00 PM at New Salem Baptist Church in Patterson, LA.

Visitation will be Saturday, February 1, 2025, from 11:00 AM until the commencement of the celebration at New Salem Baptist Church in Patterson, LA.

James will be interred at New Salem Baptist Cemetery in Patterson, LA.

James departed this life on January 21, 2025, at Chateau Terrebonne in Houma, LA.

He was born on March 2, 1947, to the late Joseph and Alice Griffin Duchan. James graduated from Hattie Watts High School in 1965. He was married in Holy Matrimony to Loretta Grogan Duchan on November 20, 1991.

James was employed with Halliburton where he retired after 29 years. James confessed Christ and was baptized on January 29, 1999, by Pastor Samuel Calhoun at New Salem Baptist Church.

He was appointed to the Deacon Board and Ordained on March 11, 2012, by Pastor Samuel Calhoun, He was also a member of the Brotherhood.

James leaves to cherish his memories his loving & devoted wife Loretta Grogan-Duchan; two devoted nieces, Sheila Paul, Esna (Thad) Melson; two in laws that were reared as James & Loretta's children, Melissa & Joseph Grogan; seven brothers- in-law, Wallace G. Grogan, Earl (Caroline) Grogan, Timothy Grogan, Garrett (Kathleen) Grogan, Saul (Ebony) Grogan, lll all of Patterson LA, Paul Grogan of Morgan City, LA, and Marvin Grogan of New Iberia LA; six sisters-in-law, Brunetta (CC) Stewart Jr, Betty G. Christopher, Sally T. Grogan all of Patterson, LA, Edna Mae of Baldwin, LA, Ethel Johnson of Berwick, LA, and Brenda Grogan of Morgan City, LA; six Godchildren, John A. Johnson, Lashante I. Grogan, Arian M. Grogan, Angel N. Larce, Anthony Broussard, and Allaina Broussard; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends that realizes that earth has no sorrow that Heaven cannot heal and who loved and will miss him greatly.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Alice Griffin Duchan; one brother, Joseph Duchan Jr.; two sisters, Joann Paul, Althea Paul; one niece, Tina Paul; father-in-law, Saul Grogan, Sr.; mother-in-law, Loretta Triggs-Grogan; four brothers-in-law, Saul Grogan, Sr., Charles L. Grogan, Sr., Clarence Grogan, and Edward J. Grogan.
