Luther Ray Alexander, lovingly known as "Pop" by his grandchildren, passed away peacefully at home on February 21, 2025, at the age of 90, surrounded by his beloved family.
Born on December 25, 1934, in Charenton, Louisiana, to Joseph and Lola Nell Alexander. Luther was a man of strength, wisdom, and unwavering dedication to his family.
He attended Sager Brown and graduated from Franklin Negro high school in 1954. It was during these formative years that he met the love of his life, his high school sweetheart, Rose Anar Alexander. In 1957, they were united in marriage, a bond that remained strong for 66 blessed years until Rose's passing in February 2023. Their love story continues even in eternity, as Luther's funeral will take place in the same month as hers, two years later—a testament to a love that transcends time.
Shortly after their wedding, Luther and Rose embarked on a new journey, leaving Louisiana to settle in Brooklyn, New York, in 1959. It was there that they built a home and raised their three daughters; Monica, Albertha, and Dorothy. Luther worked tirelessly as a foreman for Nassau Suffolk Frozen Food Distributors in Great Neck, NY, dedicating 44 years of service before retiring.
After retirement, Luther and Rose relocated to Baldwin, Louisiana, where he embraced a new chapter in life. Never one to stay idle, he founded Luther concrete service alongside his close friends Arthur Lofton and Teddy Thomas, a venture that kept him engaged until 2023.
Luther was not just a grandfather; he was the foundation of his family, the only father figure many of his grandchildren knew. He led with love, discipline, and an unshakable commitment to providing for those he cherished. His home was always filled with laughter, love, and the mouthwatering aroma of crab boils and barbecues. Whether in New York or Louisiana, he delighted in gathering his family and friends for these joyful occasions.
A man of many passions, Luther had a deep love for playing cards. Whether it was pity pat, poker, or any game that required skill and strategy, he relished the friendly competition, often playing for quarters with his loved ones in the garage. He also loved to travel, making annual summer trips to Louisiana and Rochester with his wife, and grandchildren, creating priceless memories along the way.
One of Luther's most cherished trademarks was his love for hats. Whether it was an Applejack hat or a classic baseball cap, he was rarely seen without one— each hat a small symbol of the pride, and confidence he carried throughout his life. Luther Ray Alexander's legacy is one of love, resilience, and unwavering devotion to his family. He leaves behind his daughters; Dorothy Thomas-Barlow, Albertha "Nicky" Alexander (Darrell); one son, Lonique Alexander; 10 grandchildren, Shaquana Thomas, Lai-Kee Thomas, Jasmine Alexander, Alexander Richards, Josephine Alexander, Emily Alexander, My'rcle Alexander, Ramona Alexander, Melissa Marion, and Teresa Lopez; 16 great-grandchildren; six great-great grandchildren; three sisters, Jean Franklin, Alice Brown, and Stella Russell; host of extended family, and friends who will forever cherish the wisdom, love, and laughter he bought into their lives.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Rose; parents; siblings, Harry Alexander, Jessie Alexander, Peggy Benjamin; and lastly his beloved daughter, Monica Alexander.
Though he is no longer physically with us, his spirit lives on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. His life was a testament to hard work, family, and faith, and his memory will continue to inspire generations to come. Rest in peace, Pop. Reunited with your beloved Rose, your love and legacy will never be forgotten.
