Funeral Service for Melvin "Stoney" Jones, Jr. will be held Saturday, April 20, 2019, 11:00 AM, at Triumph Baptist Church. Rev. Carl F. Lewis will officiate the service.
Viewing will be Saturday, April 20, 2019 from 9:00 AM until the time of service at Triumph Baptist Church.
Melvin "Stoney" Jones, Jr. was born December 28, 1956 to the late Shirley W.
Austin and Melvin Jones, Sr. He was a life-long resident of Franklin, La. Melvin departed this life on April 13, 2019 at Ochsner Hospital in New Orleans, La.
Melvin was baptized at an early age by Rev. Octave Vincent of Triumph Baptist Church. He later served under the late Rev Clarence Stewart. He continued his fellowship under the leadership of Pastor Carl Lewis. He served as a faithful member and was an active participant in various function at the church. He enjoyed singing in the men's choir.
Melvin attended Franklin Senior High School and graduated in 1975. He worked at McDermott Shipyard for 20 years then transition over to Bollinger Shipyard where he was the first Black Superintendent for 10 years. He was a mentor to many young men and women by sharing knowledge and experiences to help them along their path. He was a welder by trade, but a man of many talents. With a unique personality, he motivated many to be the best at what they did. He was never selfish and ensured anyone that crossed his path knew what was needed as they navigated through life with prayer and purpose.
He was a man that didn't bite his tongue but kept you laughing with his big personality and heart. He loved a good time and to see his family happy. If you knew him, you know he loved the game of golf and was aiming to be the next Tiger Woods with all his golfing buddies. The deal still stands on that.
He leaves to cherish in memories his loyal and devoted wife of thirty-eight years, Debra R. Jones and his beautiful and loving daughter, Sherdell "Dell" Jones, two brothers, Kenneth (Gertrude) Jones of Baton Rouge, LA; Terry (Carla) Jones of Glencoe, LA; one sister, Helen Ray of Houma, La; a devoted cousin, uncle, and big brother, Harold (Marilyn) Edwards of Franklin, LA; two devoted cousins, Bryan (Erica) Jack of Jeanerette, LA; and Elvridge Jack of Louisville, KY; two loving aunts, Ethel May Tardy and Debra Fontenot and various uncles of Franklin, LA; four brothers-in-law, Mustafa (Ruth) Rashada of Milwaukee, WI, William (Gloria) Roberson of Houston, Tx; Wallace Roberson and Jackie (Angel) Roberson of Franklin, LA; three sisters-in- law, Geraldine Roberson Lewis and Shirley Roberson of Franklin, LA; Elaine Roberson Collins of Houston, Tx; three God sons, Cody Martin, Derick Lovely, William Jackson, Jr., one God daughter, Kaila Johnson. A host of nieces, nephews, cousin and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Shirley Austin and Melvin Jones, Sr., his grandmother, Helen Williams.
