A Celebration of Life for Melvin Bartley, Jr. will be Saturday, January 11, 2025, 11:00 AM at Mt. Era Baptist Church, 406 Lawrence Street, Morgan City, LA 70380.
Visitation will be Friday, January 10, 2025 from 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM, and resume on Saturday, January 11, 2025 from 9:00 AM until the commencement of the celebration at Mt. Era Baptist Church
Melvin, Jr. will be interred in Morgan City Cemetery.
Melvin Bartley Jr. was born January 30, 1965 to Gertrude Pittman Bartley and the late Melvin Bartley.
Melvin Jr. was baptized at the Mt. Era Baptist Church at an early age.
He attended Holy Cross Catholic School and graduated from Morgan City High School in the 1983 class. He attended Southern University and A&M College and Nicholls State University. He played football at Morgan City High and Southern University.
Melvin Jr. was a God-fearing, easy going well-mannered young man who loved family, and was a protector. He was a keen observant individual who was well travelled. Melvin Jr. was big-hearted to a fault. He was quite the sportsman who absolutely loved the Raiders NFL Team. He was known to occasionally puff a good cigar. Melvin Jr. was a low-maintenance friend who usually had a big smile on his face. He was slow to anger, however he was not one to tolerate foolishness or disrespect.
Melvin Jr.'s earlier years of employment were spent with his father in the brick mason business which his father learned from his father. After a 25-year stint with the oil and gas industry and Melvin Jr.'s entrepreneurial drive, he took to the road as an independent owner-operator of Spartan Transportation with his brother Stephen Bartley. He was a quiet hard worker with varied interests.
In addition to his father, Melvin Bartley, Melvin Jr. was preceded in death by his sister, Zingara Lynn Bartley, maternal grandparents Willis and Margorie Pittman and paternal grandparents Hazel and Frank Bartley Jr., aunts, Dinah Pittman, Jacqueline Bartley, Audrey Bartley Merchant, Melinda Bartley Martin, Brenda Hebert Bartley, Shirley Pittman, and Janice Little Bartley, uncles, Bobby C. Pittman, Huey Bartley and Herbert Bartley, Murphy Sanchez, Thornton Clark, Arvel Marshall, and Lawence Martin.
Those left to cherish Melvin Jr.'s memory are his mother, Gertrude Pittman Bartley of Morgan City, brother, Stephen Willis Bartley of Lafayette, uncles, John W. (Brenda) Pittman of Morgan City, Frank Bartley III of Baton Rouge, Roland S. Merchant of Toluca Lake, CA, aunts, Ruby Bartley Sanchez, Celia Bartley Clark and Laura Bartley Marshall of Baton Rouge, Lorraine Bartley of Toledo, OH, and Gloria Bartley (Calhoun) Moultrie of New Orleans, and a plethora of cousins, other relatives and friends.
