Born Aug. 24, 1923; Susie Mae Cooks Lewis, "Mom" to some and "Maw" to others, was the last surviving child of the late Annie Brooks Cooks and Roland Cooks.  God reached down and plucked her for His Heavenly Garden on Friday, December 18, 2020.  Through if all - God has been good in her life - keeping her safe and protected in his arms!   Her warm and inviting smile showed in her eyes!  Allowing her to be Her Sweet and Feisty Self until she took her last breath.  She awoke that morning felling weak and dizzy, slumped over and never regained consciousness!  In the end - her 97-year-old heart simply gave in!

She received her education from Sager Brown, Willow Street Negro High, Southern University and most importantly LIFE's experiences!  Always willing to share her talents, Susie worked various jobs - Sager Brown, working summer in New Jersey as a server/babysitter/maid, but her love of cooking allowed her to work in the kitchen at Franklin Foundation Hospital for more than 25 years.

A warm hearted and friendly lady - when asked how she was, her response was often "Fairly Well."  Whenever she has not heard from you in a while her initially response was "Hey baby - where have you been?"  And she always wanted to know when you were coming to visit!  When you were in her presence - she treated you like you were hers!  Before her health begin to fail - she enjoyed gardening, travelling, weekly casino trips, and cooking up those special dishes (she could cook anything and everything; and did it well!).  She feed all that came to her house, sent you home with a plate for later and often cooked dishes and brought/sent them to various homes!  Many would call to ask how to cook different dishes, but she could not give you exact measurements.  She would tell you a pinch of this and a dash of that.

Baptized at an early age, she has been a member of Trinity United Methodist Church for 86 years and would often refer to herself as a Baptist Methodist.  She served her God, church, family, and friends faithfully!  Her children never wanted for anything, knew they were Loved and knew that she was on their side!  Susie loved sharing her thoughts and opinion - whether you wanted to hear them or not - with anyone who would listen.  There were no short conversations with her, and she gave you her full attention.

"May the Work I've Done Speak For Me" was one of her favorite hymns.  She served as a phenomenal example of how-to live-in grace and favor, through good times and bad times yet never letting others see the hardships endured.  Cherishing her memory are 6 daughters: Paxton Kern "P.K." Keys and Edwina "Judy" Lewis of Houston, TX; Edna Middleton and Paula Robinson (William Robinson) of Franklin, LA; and Sandra Richard and Stonjia Gibson of Baldwin, LA;  3 sons: Johnell "Bubba" Lewis (Annie Mae Lewis) of New Iberia, LA; Rogers Lewis (Alice Lewis) of Houston, TX; and Freddie Cooks of Baldwin, LA; 35 Grandchildren, 36 Great-Grandchildren, 31 Great-Great Grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, 1 God Child - Elaine Jackson, lifelong friends and phone buddies - Margie Thomas of Franklin, LA; Flora Mae Thomas of Baldwin, LA; and Pat Wilkerson of Baton Rouge, LA.

She is preceded in death by her parents, 3 brothers:  Hammond Cooks Sr., Alvin Cooks, Roland Dan Cooks; 4 sisters: Mildred Burney, Naomi Drexler, Eula Brown, Laura Jones; 2 sons: Lilton "Rudy" Cooks, Edwin Lewis; 3 sons-in-law: Charles "Butch" Middleton, Donald Ray Richard Sr., George Keys, 2 grandsons and 1 great-grandson.

MK Dixon Funeral Home is in charge of final arrangements, 337-940-9253, 211 Main Street, Baldwin, LA 70514.
