A Celebration of Life for Walter Ray Jackson, will be held Saturday, January 14, 2023 at 11:00 A.M. at MK Dixon Funeral Home in Baldwin, La.
Visitation will be Saturday, January 14, 2023 from 9:00 A.M. until the commencement of the celebration at MK Dixon Funeral Home in Baldwin, La.
Walter will be interred at Sorrel Community Cemetery in Sorrel, La.
Walter Ray Jackson was born October 30, 1943 in Houston, Texas to Geraldine Jackson and was the oldest of fourteen children. He departed from this life to his eternal rest on January 6, 2023.
He attended 8th Avenue and 23rd Avenue Elementary Schools in the Houston Heights. Walter Ray accepted Christ at an early age. He was baptized at a church in Houston but in 1962, his mother moved the family back home to Four Conners, LA where he later joined fellowship with the St. John Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Pastor Aaron Marks Sr.
Ray was Big Brother! That was why he was more than willing to sacrifice his education and leave school to help take care of his brother and sisters while their mother worked.
Ray worked for over 60 years farming and hauling sugar cane for various sugar cane growers sugar mills including Jeanerette Sugar Mill in Jeanerette, LA; Sterling Sugar Mill in Franklin, LA; Iberia Sugar Coop Inc. in New Iberia, LA; St. Mary Sugar Coop Inc. in Sorrel, LA and M.A. Patout Sugar Mill in Jeanerette, LA.
He enjoyed driving big tractors, watching cowboy movies and baseball games...Go! LA Dodgers.
He was preceded in death by his mother Geraldine Jackson Phillips; grandparents, Walter "Bubby" Jackson, Della Jackson, and Ida Jackson Johnson; three brothers, Larry, Ronald & Claude Jr. Phillips; one sister, Mary Louise Britten; one aunt, Mary Louise Phillips; one uncle, Anthony Jackson; two nephews, Troy Smith and Shelby Phillips.
Walter Ray leaves to cherish his memories, his loving companion, JoAnne Jackson of Jeanerette, La; one daughter, Thelma Jackson of Houston, TX; two sons, Walter Ray Jackson Jr. of Kaplan, La and J.R. Allen of Jeanerette, La; eight grandchildren; four brothers, Moses (Caroline) Phillips and Jessie Philips of Houston, TX; Michael (Glenda) Phillips of New Iberia, La and Theodore (Ida) Phillips of Jeanerette, La; five sisters, Margaret Reid, Brenda Rogers, Norma Yarber, Della (George) Foster and Beverly (Kevin) McFarlin all of Houston, TX; five godchildren, LaKeysha Jackson, Kylie, Courtlyn, Kourtne & Korie Charles all of Jeanerette, La, and host of Nieces, Nephews, extended family and friends. Memories of Walter Ray Jackson will forever remain with us.
