As Wardell was comforted at Chabert Medical Center in Houma, La, a sparrow from Heaven came and tapped him on the shoulder, and said, "Wardell, it is time to go home." He departed this life at 1:57 AM on July 2, 2022.

Wardell Bernard Nathan was born March 4, 1934 to Mable Albert of Baldwin, La and Edward Nathan of Jeanerette, La. He was educated at Sager Brown School in Baldwin, La. Wardell was a devout Catholic and regularly attended Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Along with tending to farm animals, he joined a highway construction crew and learned to reupholster furniture. He did this part-time as he transitioned into the trucking industry, driving for companies like Superior Fabricators, Baldwin Ready Mix, King Trucking, M&K Metals, and Ran Der Industries. He retired from his trucking career while being employed with Oceaneering. He also served as a supervisor and manager for some of these companies. He became a self-made mechanic and auto painter in addition to his many trades.

Wardell enjoyed caring for animals, specifically chickens, dogs, and cats. You may have heard him mention Butch 1 and 2, his favorite dogs. He also found joy in spending time with friends and family.

He leaves behind his wife, Marlene Keeler Nathan, of 42 years; his sons, Robert Lane Nathan (Jackson, La) and Eric Madison (Lafayette, La); one daughter, Raquel Madison (Franklin, La); stepsons, Jerry Landry (Lafayette, La) and Ricky Landry (Houston, Tx); stepdaughters, Linda Hernandez (Baton Rouge, La) and Dolores Hartman (Franklin, La); six grandsons, Marcus, Devante', Maliek, and Oden Madison, Ronnie Williams, and Wardell Nathan; one beloved granddaughter, Jada De'Lane Nathan; two goddaughters, Stephanie Broussard and Michelle L. West; devoted sons, David Guillory and Dalton Thomas; devoted play daughters, Bernadette D. Wells and Cynthia R. Richardson; a special daughter-in-law, Phyllis Guidry; and a number of step-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mable Albert Broussard and Edward Nathan; stepfather, Alfred Broussard, Sr.; ex-wife, Mary Landry Nathan; brothers, Alfred Broussard, Jr. and Aristicle Broussard; sisters, Lillian Broussard and Lillie Belle Broussard; sister-in-law, Jung Hi Broussard; and grandson, Robert Nathan, Jr.
